Root Canal Treatment

What is a
Root Canal Treatment?

Many people wince at the thought of needing root canal treatment (RCT). This fear often stems from bad previous experiences, or from hearing horror stories from friends and family. The common impression is that root canal treatment is a very painful procedure and a long drawn process.

Root canal treatment (RCT) is a therapy to treat the infected nerve centre within a tooth. The nerves of a tooth can become infected due to tooth decay, trauma or fracture of the tooth. In some cases, the infected nerves can result in excruciating pain and swelling of the gums or face due to an abscess formation at the base of the tooth root.

At Newlife Dental, the tooth to be treated is gently anaesthetised, and the infected nerve centre thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. The disinfected nerve space is then sealed to ensure long-term disinfection and to prevent the recolonisation of the nerve centre by bacteria.

Is a Root Canal Treatment and Tooth Crowning the same?

RCT and tooth crowning are very different procedures. RCT is the process of treating and disinfecting the nerve centre of a tooth while a crown serves to reinforce and strengthen the external surface of a tooth so that it can withstand chewing pressure. RCT and tooth crowning are terms that are often heard together because for many patients, by the time a tooth has degenerated to the point of requiring RCT, the same tooth would have been so badly broken down that it also requires a crown to strengthen it and restore its function.

What is a Single Visit Root Canal Treatment?

The traditional method of RCT requires two or more treatment sessions. If a dental crown is also required, a patient may require four or more appointments for the complete treatment of an infected tooth. These numerous appointments create multiple inconveniences for many patients because of the time they have to take off work, as well as an increased number of anaesthetic injections they have to undergo as part of their treatment.

However, contemporary research and the refinement of RCT techniques have shown that many nerve infection cases can be successfully treated in a single appointment visit. At Newlife Dental, we offer single visit RCT options to appropriate patients with the possibility of having the crown preparation done together too. Such a treatment plan saves a lot of time. The patient would only have to undergo the anaesthetic injection once, at the first appointment. The anaesthetic injection is not required at the second appointment for the crown fitting. Hooray!
